The present monument was built at the end of the 13th century on the orders of James II of Majorca. The first mention of the Tour de la Massane dates from 1293, when it was known by the Catalan name of "Torre de Pérabona", or good stone.
For a long time, the tower kept its role as a lookout, as in 1728 its garrison was camped in the Place d'Armes and soldiers took turns behind its loopholes and at the lookout post on the summit.
