The site is thought to be of Roman origin, but it is only mentioned for the first time in 897 under the name of "Tacione". In medieval times, the castle of Taxo was the birthplace of a family holding the title of Viscount of Roussillon.
It still has important remains today. Part of the crenellated surrounding wall dating from the 11th century remains, as well as two semi-circular corner towers built later. There is also a 15th century cylindrical tower, probably related to the signal towers...The site is thought to be of Roman origin, but it is only mentioned for the first time in 897 under the name of "Tacione". It still has important remains today. Part of the crenellated surrounding wall dating from the 11th century remains, as well as two semi-circular corner towers built later. There is also a 15th century cylindrical tower, probably related to the signal towers of La Massane and Madeloc.
In the centre of the fortified enclosure stands an astonishing chapel dedicated to Saint Martin and the Holy Cross.
