Tell me about the beach
Every Wednesday
Departure : 10h00
Argelès-Plage Tourist Office
Duration: 2 hours
Few people know the origins of the seaside resort of Argelès-Plage. Until the 19th century, the people of Argelès showed little interest in the coast, which was perceived as a dangerous and unhealthy area. But the situation changed radically in the 1870s with the creation of the first housing estates, the installation of a French army camp and the arrival of the first campers. In the middle of the 20th century, the creation of a camp for Spanish refugees and the German occupation put a stop to the development of the beach, which resumed in earnest in the 1960s.
